There's an excellent illustration from a movie called “HERO”, where the star reporter was being smitten by guilt at an award ceremony in her honor.  She pulled out an onion and began peeling off layer after layer as she detailed the brutal process of uncovering a newsstory.  A rumor is heard, interviews are made, a story is printed, but the story turns out to be untrue.  But more rumors surface and the process continues over and over, exposing and destroying the person and his family in the process.  Tears were running down her face as fumes stung her eyes, and with the onion fully peeled she said, “What if it turns out, after all that digging, there was no story?”

Are you more afraid of the layers being peeled off or of the possibility that there may be nothing underneath?  Are you with me?  I think it's safe to say you don't like anyone digging into your personal life anymore than I do.  It's not simply “personal preference” that sends our defense mechanisms into high gear, we are attempting to protect ourselves.  The way we handle it may LOOK different -- I may go nutso while you quietly manipulate -- but both of us will do whatever it takes to avoid it.  If we had shovels you would be filling the hole as fast as I could dig it!

It's amazing what you hear when you really listen.  It's not easy because you and I are so used to hearing others from our own perspective -- and not from theirs.  Why do you think people pay psychologists so much money to sit back and listen to them answer their own questions?  What if we were to do this with each other, but our questions were driven by the desire “to know nothing among you except Christ and Him crucified (1 Cor2:2)”?  Permission was given for me to publish these encounters I've had with others.
